When the pioneers came west, they brought with them a dance called the quadrille, which means square in French. The pioneers liked the simpler term and so the square dance was born. The dance is known for its series of figures and footwork. Dancers are directed by a caller. It is easy to learn, a good form of exercise and fun.

The object of the North Carolina Folk, Round & Square Dance Federation is to promote Western style Square and Round Dancing throughout the state of North Carolina; to seek to improve and better Square and Round Dancing as a source of pleasure, physical and mental health, and well being.

Dancers:
North Carolina lost one of its most dedicated supporters of square dancing today.
Wayne Godfrey, 60, died at Duke University Medical Center just three weeks after being diagnosed with Stage IV kidney cancer.
Wayne designed and built the website for the North Carolina Federation of Square and Round Dancers.
For years he patiently maintained it, cheerfully updating clubs' pages to suit their needs.
He edited and tweaked ad infinitum so that each club page was colorful and well-formatted.
For years, Wayne and Debora have competently handled Registration at the State Convention.
After months of preparation, they toiled long hours at the registration desk so that dancers could smoothly sign in and start dancing.
Thank you, Wayne, for your years of service to all of us dancers. We will miss you more than words can say.
